14 Day "Overlander" Camping Safari - Cairns to Darwin

The Gulf & Kakadu "Overlander" is a 14 day all overland camping safari through northern Australia between Cairns and Darwin. Experince the epic Gulf Savannah region, North Queensland's Gulf Country, the majestic outback vistas of the Northern Territory, and the unique wetlands of Kakadu National Park.

Itinerary

Day 1 (LD): Atherton Tableland's Curtain Fig Tree and “The Crater” National Park. Undara Lava Tubes tour (optional). Camp at Undara.

Day 2 (BL): Gulf towns of Mt Surprise, Georgetown, Croydon and Normanton, home of the "Gulflander" en-route to camp at Karumba.

Day 3 (BLD): "Plains of Promise", Burke & Wills camp #119, Leichhardt Falls and Burketown en-route to camp at Escott Barramundi Lodge.

Day 4 (BLD): Mitchell Grass plains, spinifex clad ranges and the inviting Gregory River on our way to Lawn Hill National Park, our two-night camp.

Day 5 (BLD): A leisurely day in Lawn Hill National Park and a tour to the World Heritage listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields (optional).

Day 6 (BLD): At Bowthorn Station, Kerry McGinnis, author of "Pieces of Blue" and "Heart Country" relates tales of outback life during a fascinating tour of the homestead. Travel on Hell's Gate to camp overnight.

Day 7 (BLD): Cross into the Northern Territory to Borroloola, frontier town. On to Butterfly Springs for two nights.

Day 8 (BLD): Limmen National Park to see spectacular carved sandstone pillars known as "Lost City" formations. Return to Butterfly Springs camp.

Day 9 (BL): On to remote Roper Bar, where explorer Ludwig Leichhardt crossed in 1845. On to Mataranka Hot Springs to camp.

Day 10 (BLD): Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park to bushwalk or enjoy a cruise up the famous gorge (optional). Camp in the National Park.

Day 11 (BLD): Kakadu National Park today. Explore and swim at Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) en-route to our three night base camp at Cooinda.

Day 12 (BD): Aboriginal rock art at Nourlangie Rock and the Bowali Visitor Centre. A sunset cruise (optional) on Kakadu's world famous Yellow Waters Billabong.

Day 13 (BL): The Arnhem Land escarpment to walk and swim at magnificent Jim Jim Falls.

Day 14 (BL): Visit Ubirr, famous for its rock art and views of the East Alligator River floodplain. Cross the South Alligator River and the Marrakai Plains en-route to Darwin.

The "Overlander" Camping Safari can also be taken in the opposite direction - Darwin to Cairns - and the reverse itinerary is:

  • Day 1 (LD): Darwin to Cooinda (Ubirr)
  • Day 2 (BL): Arnhemland Escarpment & Jim Jim Falls
  • Day 3 (BD): Nourlangie Rock (Yellow Waters option)
  • Day 4 (BLD): To Katherine (Barramundi Gorge)
  • Day 5 (BLD): To Mataranka (cruise option, Hot Springs)
  • Day 6 (BLD): To Butterfly Springs (Roper Bar)
  • Day 7 (BLD): Limmen National Park “Lost City”
  • Day 8 (BLD): To Hell’s Gate (Borroloola)
  • Day 9 (BLD): To Lawn Hill NP (Bowthorn Station)
  • Day 10 (BLD): Lawn Hill National Park (Riversleigh option)
  • Day 11 (BLD): To Escott Station (Gregory, Burketown)
  • Day 12 (BL): To Karumba (B&W Camp #119, Normanton)
  • Day 13 (BLD): To Undara (Croydon, Georgetown)
  • Day 14 (BL): To Cairns (Lava Tubes tour option)
