British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2000

Savannah Guides Best In Australia

Savannah Guides has been chosen as the winner of the inaugural Australian division of the British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2000. Don Clark, British Airway's Regional General Manager, said the Award recognises Savannah Guides' outstanding contribution to the conservation of our natural and cultural environment.

"Naturally we're ecstatic with the news - it's a great thrill for all Savannah Guides' members and their families. We have been measured 'toe-to-toe' against many other Australian tourism and environmental organisations, and enterprises of substantial size. This really justifies the faith and support our friends and sponsors have given us over the years" said Tom Warnes, President of Savannah Guides and owner of Savannah Guides Master Operator, Wilderness Challenge.

"The British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are very prestigious in a global arena and involve entrants going up against the best nature based tourism operations in the world. For Savannah Guides to be recognised as Australia's best is a fantastic achievement" he added.

Savannah Guides was established as a non-profit organisation in 1988 to assist in the development of regional tourism in the Gulf Savannah region of northern Queensland. Since those early days, Savannah Guides has expanded across the entire Tropical Savannahs of northern Australia, from Cairns through the Northern Territory to Broome. Its members include local tourism enterprises and individual guides who share common ideals of "protection and interpretation" of each region's natural and cultural assets. Living and working in outback Australia, Savannah Guides has overcome the "tyranny of distance" through the development of a comprehensive website. Their tours educate the travelling public, foster guide training and have led to better management of several natural and cultural sites in northern Australia.
